The breakwater visible above the tree line was constructed using the hulls of nine concrete hulled ships built during World War II. The bridge spans approximately 1.9 miles over the Bay of St. Louis and connects the cities of Bay St, Louis and Pass Christian along the Gulf Coast in south Mississippi. The Green Flash is a true meterological optical phenomena usually (though rarely seen) occurring at sunset when the part of the sun just remaining above the water flashes green only lasting 1 to 2 seconds. Marigny's plantation and sugar mill stood on what is now Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville, Louisiana. Remnants of the sugar mill still remain to this day. The memorial is composed of two adjoining walls each measuring just under 247 feet in length and ranging from 8 inches to 10 feet in height. Today more than 58,000 names have been inscribed on the 144 black granite panels which comprise the two walls. The trace covers some 31 miles of asphalt surface through mostly forested marshland connecting the towns of Covington to the north and Slidell to the southeast. Bayou Lacombe (found in "Landscapes") is a welcome surprise encountered when riding the trace through the small town of Lacombe. Two things in particular stood out: (1) the striking orange color, and (2) the perfect, undisturbed formation of each shelf. Time seemed to be of no interest as he hunched looking at me as I captured him in this photo. Long considered by many as Nature’s Friend, Francis actually considered Nature to be his friend. He is fondly remembered for referring to the sun and moon as “Brother Sun, Sister Moon”. This particular creation depicts Francis as God’s harbinger of peace. Notice the wolf, the lamb, and the pair of doves all rest peacefully together around Francis, a sign of God’s ultimate desire for all to live in peace as one family.
